Don't miss out!

First, here is your reminder that it's the last day to register for classes this session! The dogs had their last local indoor agility trial this weekend before the outdoor season begins!! It was also Ginny's first time back since her long break after her spay. And unfortunately, the trial was harder for her than I expected. I was a bit disappointed on Saturday as we had been making such nice progress! It's hard to see them take steps back. Thankfully while it felt slow and meh, it wasn't all...

Almost spring! The snow will melt and soon I'll be able to do way more training outside! Loot is making some progress on his PTSD from the 2 "incidents" at the training club from last summer and then 2 months ago. I'm currently leaving him in the car and training him when all classes are done for the night. But I have been able to bring him out a few times to do some very short turns during one of my classes! He struggles when he's close to the other rings, but is trying ridiculously hard....

Ginny had one last hike before her spay this past week. She's not so happy about her restriction, but I'm thrilled I was able to get this in before she was expected to come into heat in March. Now she'll be ready to get back into training by spring and we won't lose half our summer together and we'll be able to go to the events I wanted to try with her this summer and fall. Another week of restriction and then we start conditioning work! Loot is still struggling to train at our club. He's...

I want to talk to you about settling behaviors today. I've been working with quite a few people recently on helping their dogs chill out when not actively working. Maybe you too have a dog who barks at you with any break in the action? Or perhaps the more subtle behaviors of huffing, tap dancing, or poking the treat pouch? There are 2 common responses I see in handling these behaviors and I want you to stop doing both of them Ignoring it Feeding them, when they finally shut up So I wrote a...

Watching for Netta to get home from school. And perhaps looking for squirrels. Poor Loot. My sensitive boy has struggled a bit this last month when training at our club. He's already been a bit on edge in scent hurdle practice since a (friendly) dog from the next-door flyball practice slipped into the ring and rushed up to him, about 6 months ago. On edge meaning not really functional once the flyball team arrives! (Although he did 2 very happy restrained recalls last practice!!) But...

Hey Reader!, This last week I did a daily training challenge of working fronts with my crew- 3 dogs and the cat. Arlo and Freya were new. Ginny has fronts that (usually) make me feel like I know what I'm doing. And since this fall, Loot at least no longer melts and thinks fronts are a horribly tricky exercise anymore. But he still needs a lot of work! As I was helping those who posted along with me, I decided that a blog post was necessary! So many people work on front platforms but struggle...

Freya is working on so many things right now I thought I'd give her a full recap just for her! (Plus I slighted her on my December training video email by not including her!) This is for you Freya fans! I have to say that I'm so proud of how well she's not just eager to train but actually sticking with it more when things are a bit tough. We still have sessions where she just can't do anything but rub, but mostly she's excited to go and gets mad when I don't do an evening session! Recent...

Time to think back on the year and reflect on the new year ahead! Every year I make a video. A video highlighting a lot of our good moments, none of the struggles. I make it for me, but if you like watching kids and dogs then enjoy! Otherwise scroll by! https://youtu.be/hVK8epHUVFc 2023 was a pretty big year for us. I finally got back to competing after losing Zumi. That long break from trialing was tough for me and it felt good, and a bit scary, to be back at it with 2 young dogs. It was a...

Happy almost new year to all! I hope everyone had a somewhat relaxing holiday. I'm not quite ready to reflect on the last year or look towards the new. So I'll just leave you with these December training videos you may have missed! December Videos! I was working hard at the beginning of the month on ring prep for 3 dogs getting ready for rally! Grace is a borrowed dog and I'm reviewing some ring entrances and small bits of work with rewards at a distance. Arlo is a service dog in training who...

Well the first rally trial for my 2 dogs was this last weekend. I wrote about their experiences (mostly good!) on facebook already so I won't go into full detail here. (Loot and Ginny's runs here. And Grace's more difficult runs here) But I want to explore a bit more on what trial results actually do, and do not, tell you. And how do you know whether you should keep trialing or not. Those first trials can be deceiving. It's a really common story with those taking my Ring Confidence classes...
